Do Legal Origins Predict Legal Substance?

There is a large body of research in economics and law suggesting that the legal origin country—that is, whether its regime based on English common or French, German, Nordic civil law—profoundly impacts range outcomes. However, exact relationship between substance has been disputed literature not fully explored with nuanced coding. We revisit this debate while leveraging novel cross-country data sets provide detailed coding two areas laws: property antitrust. find having shared origins strongly predicts countries have similar regimes but does little to predict antitrust regimes. Our results suggest may be an important predictor well-established explain substantive variation more recent law.
